SOME OPPORTUNITIES IN NIGERIA'S PRESENT ECONOMY
MARKET SIZE
Nigeria, the largest economy in Africa, has the largest GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) of $1.1tr; the largest population of 181m people which 168m are between the ages of 1 – 54 and 113m people between the ages of 1 – 24 yrs. UNCTAD (2013) voted Nigeria as the second most profitable place offering rates of return in excess of 35%.
AGRICULTURE
By the year 2030, Nigeria's population will increase from 181m to 300m people at the population growth rate of 2.5% - 3%. The current urban population of 47.8% at the current urbanization rate of 4.66% would result in 70% urban population. UN Secretary General Bank Ki Moon says the world needs to produce 30% more food by 2030.
HOUSING
The current annual output in the formal housing sector is estimated at 100,000 units. By 2050, the UN estimates that 75% of Nigeria’s population will be living in cities and this translates into an annual housing requirement over the coming decades of at least 700,000 units to keep up with growing population and urban migration.
